Hello!
I just watched an IG reel from some mom-fluencer where she moaned about how August seemed to drag on forever.
She had run out of ideas to entertain the kids and was twiddling her thumbs, patiently waiting for summer to end.
And I was like, ‘WHAT?’
Nope. Soz hun. Can’t relate to that.
My kids go back to school today and it feels like the past 6 weeks have gone in a blink.
We’ve been ridiculously busy, it’s been chaos, but somehow I managed to squeeze some work in the cracks as well.
In August, I worked as much as the time allowed with all the travelling we like to do.
I was able to spend about 30 hours on my niche sites in total.
That’s less than an hour per day. Yikes!
And yet, I made $46,334.
($29,043 of that was profit)
Read on and I’ll tell you how…
About that mom-fluencer though…
People like that frustrate the hell out of me.
She has so much potential to make a fortune, but she’s wasting it by being bored.
She has a social following already…
What a headstart!
If I were her, I’d stick the kids in a holiday club 3 days a week and spend that time making a ton of money with affiliate marketing.
The kids would be entertained for 6 hours a day.
Her day would fly by, once she got in the flow of work.
And she’d be spending the next summer with the kids in the Caribbean, probs.
It’s not her fault she’s sitting at home, bored, playing Snakes and Ladders for the 10th time in a week.
The problem is, like so many, she doesn’t know HOW to monetise an audience online.
Most content creators are not business people.
And so they make no money from it.
Most people don’t even know it’s POSSIBLE to make $1,000 per day while spending most of your time with your kids.
But, as we know, it is possible.
There are more ways than ever before to do it.
And I’m here to help.
In August, my travel blog made $45,507.
Here’s where the income came from:
- $21,878 from display ads with Raptive
- $13,522 from affiliate marketing
- $8,470 from brand campaigns*
- $1,313 from email sponsors
- $523 from the Facebook bonus program
- $334 from YouTube ads
*A brand campaign is a package that might include sponsored blog posts, social media content, videos, emails etc
Last year, 90% of my income came from display ads.
My goal was to reduce that to 50% and I’m really pleased to have achieved that this month.
Why that goal?
Well, display advertising is the only income stream that requires someone to actually visit my website.
I don’t want the website to be the centre of my business.
Instead, I want the website, email newsletter, social profiles and YouTube channel to all work together.
Wherever my ideal person is, I want to meet them there and help solve their problems.
They don’t need to find my website for that.
I used to report on pageviews.
But honestly, they don’t matter!
So yes, my team and I have still been working on the website, but we’ve also been working on other things.
We’ve been growing the email list and sending more often.
We’ve been posting more content on Facebook.
We’ve been making YouTube videos.
We’ve been building direct relationships with brands.
It’s working well now, and also building a more sustainable future.
One of my favourite things to work on is Facebook ads.
This topic would be better as it’s own email, so for now I’ll just say…
I spent $2,802 on Facebook ads and they generated:
- $4,057 in affiliate revenue,
- $1,873 in ad revenue, and
- 1,900 email subscribers
I find Facebook ads to be so much fun.
It’s like a video game, but you always win, and it’s real money.
Of course, there are skills to learn, but you learn that step-by-step for under $100 if you want to.
I see Facebook ads playing a big role in my future.
This income report is already getting quite long so I won’t go into details about my case study site, Vegan Wins, here.
But there’s lots planned for that too.
I’ll have an update on that for you next week.
But if there are any topics you’d like me to cover in more detail in future emails, please reply to let me know and I’ll do my best.
Wishing you a productive September.
