#53 | Niche sites aren’t worth it any more

A question that gets asked a lot is…

“Are niche sites still worth it?”

And that’s a very valid question right now…

Because on one hand, you have AI tools that can write better than most writers can.

And on the other, you have Google changing in the direction of not actually sending people to your site anyway.

So it’s not surprising that people are asking…

Should you still bother?

Well my answer to that is yes, BUT (massive but) we need to do it differently now.

This time last year,

It was a perfectly reasonable strategy to:

  • Build sites in several niches
  • Target low-competition keywords
  • Hire cheap writers
  • Ignore video and social media

That worked amazingly well.

It was a lean and efficient model.

Many people I know were easily bringing in $100K/month with this strategy.

This was my strategy too.

But it’s not anymore.

Here’s why…

  • B̶u̶i̶l̶d̶ s̶e̶v̶e̶r̶a̶l̶ s̶i̶t̶e̶s̶ i̶n̶ d̶i̶f̶f̶e̶r̶e̶n̶t̶ n̶i̶c̶h̶e̶s̶ – This protects you from fck all. If one goes down, they’ll probably all go down
  • T̶a̶r̶g̶e̶t̶ l̶o̶w̶-̶c̶o̶m̶p̶e̶t̶i̶t̶i̶o̶n̶ k̶e̶y̶w̶o̶r̶d̶s̶ – These are running out so fast now that people are using AI to 100X their output
  • H̶i̶r̶e̶ c̶h̶e̶a̶p̶ w̶r̶i̶t̶e̶r̶s̶ – AI can write better than cheap writers in 2023
  • I̶g̶n̶o̶r̶e̶ v̶i̶d̶e̶o̶ a̶n̶d̶ s̶o̶c̶i̶a̶l̶ m̶e̶d̶i̶a̶ – You need video and social media to prove that you’re a real person actually doing the thing you write about

So, I’ve changed my strategy.

And it’s not just me who has.

All the big guns have…

Anne Moss now uses AI writers and targets Facebook, Pinterest and email traffic

Jon Dykstra is going all in on one site and has even bought a physical business to support it.

Mike Donovan sold his site while it was hot and has a new strategy for the next

Me? I’m focusing on one site, only hiring writers with real experience and making videos.

There are many directions in which you can pivot.

It’s up to you to discover which way excites you most.

But what you can’t do…

Is keep using old tactics and expect them to work like they used to.

That’s never been a good strategy for anything.

Times change, and so long as we adapt to that, we’ll be absolutely fine.

You got this!

You’re signed up to some good emails for a start, so you’re already way ahead of most when it comes to staying current.
